A father who gave his helmetless toddler a lift home from day care on the gas tank of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle was arrested yesterday for endangering the child. Indianapolis Police said the boy was straddled over the gas tank between the seat and handlebars as his father drove north on Centennial Street near 30th Street at 5 p.m.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Emily Perkins said in a report that the child could “impede his ability to turn the motorcycle and his ability to see in front of him” by putting his two-year-old boy on the tank. When Perkins asked the father why the boy wasn’t wearing a helmet and sitting on the gas tank, he replied, “It’s only from day care.” — a short distance home. But Perkins said traffic in the area is very busy “with one of the highest rates of crashes in the city.”
